Julio Romney says education on how our Political system works is important to St. Maarten’s successful move towards the next level, instead of Politicians jockeying for power, jumping ship and destablizing the economy and wanting to be viewed as popular. The Political Analyst and Author who also wrote a book on St. Maarten our Constituent State and Constitutional Frame Work, was at the time being interviewed on radio by Peoples Voice host Wendell Moore.
Romney says every one including politicians must educate themselves on the Dutch Kingdom constitutional frame-work into which St. Maarten fits, and the importance of how it is set up to function. If we are to take on National Responsibilities, we must understand the accountabilities of the political leadership and that of the legislature. Some politicians are already saying they want out of the system before first knowing how the present system works.
As for our citizens, the electorate must understand as well, the role they play when they are called on to elect candidates for the Legislature or (Parliament). Romney cited if we continue to operate the same way we did when it was the Netherlands Antilles, we will not experience the development and sustainability of our economy and the Island, the way we should. And worse yet, to even consider Independence. He said he is happy to have his book “St. Maarten our Constituent State Constitutional Frame Work” out there but not enough is done with it to educate citizens on how our constituent states functions within the Dutch Kingdom. Romney further says personal Politics and acts of emotions displayed by politicians will not help us move forward towards self-governing. In many ways we still operate as if we were still part of the Netherlands Antilles.
The citizens are kept in the dark, and they continue to follow the old time politics of who they should vote for rather than choosing competent candidates who have the interest of wanting to serve in their Parliament to guide the governing process forward, amending laws and national ordinances which are important to the justice system ruling and make decisions according to the Laws. A country should always be governed by laws and not feelings. How one feels is not important; what the law sys is most important. And that’s the education that must be passed on to the citizens of the Constituent State of St. Maarten or (Country St. Maarten) if we are to take full control of governing without having to feel we are over powered by Holland.
