Landfill Entrance Fee Launched…
The Government of Sint Maarten is taking steps towards sustainable waste management by introducing an entrance fee at the Landfill. The initiative is part of a broader effort to transition away from outdated disposal practices that have contributed to the growth of the landfill and the increased risks to public health and the environment.
The introduction of this fee signals the start of a national shift towards a more sustainable, and responsible waste practice. Each disposal at the landfill will see a XCG 10.00 charge applied to both residential and commercial waste. The small fee represents the first step in a multi-phase transformation. More information on how this will work is forth coming.
This change is guided by the Government’s long-term Waste Vision 2050, supported by the National Recovery Program Bureau (NRPB) under the Emergency Debris Management Project. The statement issued further cited that “Strengthening waste management systems are essential for building resilience and supporting the long-term sustainable development of Sint Maarten. This project is one that the World Bank, through the Sint Maarten Trust Fund, is pleased to support.”
As the billboard reads, its now or never, and it takes all of us.
