Gospel Star Edwin Hawkins Passes Away at 74
Oakland born gospel star Edwin Hawkins, best known for his hit song “Oh Happy Day” passed away Monday at the age of 74. According to his publicist, Hawkins died at his home in Pleasanton, California following a battle with pancreatic cancer. Hawkins, who was known as a major force for contemporary inspirational music, stood out for enjoying commercial success while still performing music that openly celebrated religious faith. Over his career, Hawkins made dozens of records and won four Grammys, including for the songs “Every Man Wants to Be Free” and “Wonderful!”
