Dump fire sprays deadly smoke over City…
The dump site once again turned into an inferno Wednesday spraying toxic smoke over the city of Philipsburg and the Cul-De-Sac area for the better part of Wednesday well into the evening. This is another reminder of the seriousness of the problem before us when it comes to how we manage our waste. The dump site was at one time situated in a remote part of the island that was called back bay. That area has since been developed into a somewhat upscale residential area. It was temporarily removed to the now land fill with the intension of finding a permanent location for dumping our waste.
Over the years the location has been totally ignored and the years keep passing by, the site has now grown into a mountain of toxic waste covered by sand and dirt and sitting in the middle of one of our famous land marks, the Great salt Pond which is hugging the edge of the capital city Philipsburg. Politicians have all campaign on the premise that this situation is not healthy and must be fixed but none of them has shown anything tangible to have the situation looked after. Every VROMI minister danced around a proposed waste to energy plant that was once tabled as a solution, but to this day no one is even talking about any plans to have this mountainous problem fixed.
The New Year 2017 opened and all we have been experiencing is fire after fire spraying poisonous smoke over the entire Island and raising questions from visitors and others who don’t know, where this smoke is coming from. The Minister of VROMI would do himself good to spend his time finding a permanent solution for what he is now responsible for and do so on behalf of the ones who voted him into office. Until the residence hears from the ministry what are their plans, one can only think of the many places in the Caribbean they have visited or even lived where you can wake up to fresh air in the morning rather than venomous smoke that can turn deadly.
