Meyers, I will not stand in the way of progress…
The deputy leader of the UP party, Mr. Franklyn Meyers, has withdrawn himself as formateur and returned the commission to form an interim government for St. Maarten after he was granted the opportunity to do so by His Excellency Governor E.B. Holiday. The need to form an interim government came when the Parliament gave the William Marlin’s cabinet of Ministers a vote of no confidence and forcing them to make their positions available. This was immediately followed by the cabinet of Ministers invoking article 59 in the constitution and dissolving Parliament.
The Governor then named the UP faction leader in Parliament, Mr. Franklin Meyers, to form an interim government that will be in place until the snap elections scheduled for February 26th 2018. The first report on the formation was due on the 4th of December but was later extended to December 15th. This was a signal that the formation process was experiencing difficulties with the screening of candidate ministers. The daily newspaper reported that Meyers’ withdrawal was decided on when he was informed that, during the screening, the National Security Service (VDSM) discovered that he himself has questionable dealings with business and family that will bar him from participating in the cabinet of Ministers.
A disappointed Meyers told the Daily Herald he will not stand in the way of progress of this already devastated country and says his goal in public service has always been to serve, but it’s unfortunate that matters, that at one time did not affect his candidacy, now surfaced as a hindrance of him becoming the next Prime Minister of St. Maarten. The Governor will have to find a next candidate to carry out the formation process.
