Don’t let the smile fool you: behind it is a deep desire to rise to the top in boxing. After coming back from St. Lucia with the youth middle weight gold medal, Stephan Duzong has shown that he has what it takes to make his parents and by extension St. Maarten proud. One may wonder how can a young man who is influenced heavily by basketball in his immediate surroundings, and a dad who plays the sport of basketball, finds himself so in love with boxing.
His father who works closely with him as a trainer, sums up Stephan as one who eats, sleep and breathe boxing. There’s never a moment that he needs to be reminded of where he wants to be in the sport. Stephen is self-motivated and as such, a hard worker that knows, only by commitment and hard work can he make it to the top. After a moment of personal failure in his teenage years in school, it open up the opportunity for him to quickly discover that he is gifted in the sport of boxing and yearn very much to make it to the highest level. He wants to become a professional boxer and therefore is willing to put the hard work in to make it happen.
So far, his love for the sport and the desire to be the best, gave him the chance to visit the Dominican Republic for an Olympic high intensity training session that his trainer vowed to keep the same intensity throughout his continued training. It has helped him to win the Gold in his class, when he competed in St. Lucia earlier this year.
Stephan Duzang is only 19 years but already he knows what he is all about. He is quick enough to fly like a butterfly and his punches can be painful enough to sting like a bee. He is fast becoming the pride and love of the boxing paternity on St. Maarten. Look out for Stephan Duzong on the next boxing card scheduled to be on October 14th 2017 here on St. Maarten, A production of the St. Maarten National Boxing Association.
